British Farmers May Win Right to Export Live Veal Calves to Europe Again

Obviously this is a disgusting practice that people actually died to stop. It’s not only bad how they live before their early slaughter, but now they’ll be subject to additional abuse while transporting via plane.

And as a nice addition, it seems the prior operations were run by a criminal involved in cocaine: "The veal-calf flights out of Coventry airport were run by Phoenix Aviation boss Christopher Barrett-Jolley who was later jailed for 20 years for cocaine-smuggling."

Yep, they were definitely in good hands.

For more on why veal is a practice full of abuse, see this site: http://www.noveal.org/

A few quote from the article below:

"The thing is you can transport refrigerated meat so there's no need to take these poor animals miles and miles, and hours and hours, with very little water, and I can promise you they don't get much (water), in misery.

"And why? Because farmers want us to have nice, white meat? The whole lot stinks."

ANIMAL rights campaigner Nancy Phipps is heart-broken that farmers can now restart the trade which led to the death of her daughter Jill while protesting against it.

The Coventry grandmother had been hoping against hope that British farmers would not win the right to export live veal calves to Europe again.

She's warned there will now be animal rights protests "all over the country, wherever they do it" as others follow Jill's example.

Jill died under the wheels of a lorry 11 years ago while campaigning against live veal calves being flown out of Coventry Airport at Baginton.

Speaking from her Hillfields flat, Mrs Phipps said: "When I heard about it I just sat and sobbed.

"I could not believe my lovely Jill had died fighting to stop live exports and they were going to do it all over again.

"We used to be at Baginton night and day for months. We hardly had any sleep and all for what? They're starting them up again."

Today an expert committee of EU vets recommended the ban be lifted. The European Commission is expected to adopt the recommendation in about six weeks time and the European Parliament has a month to scrutinise it after that.

The ban was imposed 10 years ago to prevent the spread of mad cow disease from Britain.

Jill's funeral at Coventry Cathedral focussed the world on the live export trade, with film star Brigitte Bardot and former Tory Cabinet minister Alan Clark, both animal-lovers, turning up to the service. She was just 31 when she died leaving a nine-year-old son Luke.

Mrs Phipps said: "There will be protests all over the country wherever they do it. They don't honestly think after all these years of stopping live exports they're going to calmly walk back and have no more trouble? There's no need for it, and it's just greed.

"The thing is you can transport refrigerated meat so there's no need to take these poor animals miles and miles, and hours and hours, with very little water, and I can promise you they don't get much (water), in misery.

"And why? Because farmers want us to have nice, white meat? The whole lot stinks."

Now aged 80, and reliant on a wheelchair, she said she'd be unlikely to get to many protests herself.

The veal-calf flights out of Coventry airport were run by Phoenix Aviation boss Christopher Barrett-Jolley who was later jailed for 20 years for cocaine-smuggling.

Its not probable that the right to export live veal calves to any place again will occur if a great multitude of people proclaim their objection. Such an event can only be made to happen if a 'great multitude of people' are made aware of the repulsive facts.
