50 Animals Killed When Flames Raced Through a Petting Zoo Barn: Many Unusual Species of Primates Killed as Well as Pigs, Sheep, Goats, Turkeys, Others

What a waste of life. My guess is squalor conditions aided or caused the fire. I doubt the victims were playing with matches. You can imagine the fear they experienced before their horrible death.

TEMPERANCE, Mich. (AP) - At least 50 animals were killed when flames raced through a petting zoo barn in Monroe County near the Ohio border.

The blaze was discovered today around 1:45 a-m and destroyed the barn at Nature's Creek Petting Zoo in Temperance. Many unusual species of primates were killed.

No people were hurt, but the owners say they are saddened by the loss of the animals.

When firefighters arrived the building was in flames and the roof had already collapsed.

Bedford Township Fire Chief John Bofia says firefighters had the flames under control within about 30 minutes.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The zoo was opened in May 1999. Among some of the animals it housed were pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, peacocks, parrots and lizards.
