Stop Animal Exploitation Now said Thursday it would ask the federal government to investigate the University of Washington's primate research lab.

The organization said it obtained post-mortem records for primates in the lab that show that some of the animals were "highly stressed" and "seriously" ill before death.

Michael Budkie, investigator with the group, said at a news conference in downtown Seattle that he would ask the U.S. Department of Agriculture to look into the research conducted there. His appearance in Seattle was part of a national tour for National Primate Liberation Week.

In response to the complaint, a UW spokeswoman said in a statement, "The National Primate Research Center at the UW is a strictly regulated research facility, and our primary objective is to accomplish outstanding biomedical research in a safe environment that meets the physiologic and psychological needs of our animals."
