Committed Vegan and Famous Actress Natalie Portman Has Eco-Friendly and Vegan Engagement Ring Made for Her

Finally some good news. Love it when famous people keep to their ideals and share it with the world.

Natalie Portman's fiancé knows what matters so much to her. Benjamin Millepied, the "Black Swan" choreographer who is also the father of the actress' unborn child, commissioned an eco-friendly engagement ring for the staunch vegan.

Jewelry designer Jamie Wolf revealed to InStyle that Millepied helped created the custom handmade ring, making sure that the diamond stunner is in alignment with the 29-year-old Oscar nominee's eco-friendly and vegan ideals.

The center stone is a round old mine cut antique diamond, the pave diamonds are certified conflict-free, and the platinum is recycled metal.

The result is a classic-looking sparkler that is estimated to cost $35,000.

Wolf, a former ballet dancer and longtime friend of Millepied, told the fashion website, "Ben was exceptionally thoughtful and dedicated and patient to make sure we had everything right. We wanted everything about the ring to speak to things that are important to Natalie."
Portman is expected to give birth to their child in the summer.

Common Animal Testing and Vivisection Questions from Students and My Answers to Them: Animal Testing and Vivisection FAQ

Every year, around the same times, we get the same questions from a variety of students around the world doing papers or presentations on animal testing or vivisection. Some are about dissection.

I usually end up responding with what you’ll see below which tend to address these common questions. I’m not saying that I’ve provided the only answers to these questions, but that they cover the basics.

As always, I refer them as well to the GEARI Information on Animal Testing starter web page which lists links to information about everything from alternatives to animal testing to lists of companies that test on animals. http://www.geari.org/animal-testing-information.html This list grows every year however, so what you see below only represents what has been asked up until now. Please excuse the numbers as they usually correspond to what the students ask.

(NOTE: These first three represent the more philosophical questions, or those that the anti-animal groups try to use on unsuspecting students. I love answering these because it shows the students that those questions are stupid and rely on circular reasoning meant to trick them. Hopefully they won’t be fooled again.)

QUESTIONS AND MY ANSWERS:

2. Because animals do not, in theory, have souls, are they still
entitled to rights? It's never been proven that they do not have
souls or that those with rights have souls. So, having a soul is not
the basis for determining what is entitled to rights. Those that try
to use this as an argument have never even proven that humans have
souls or that non-humans do not.
>
> 3. Do animals have emotions similar to humans or do they just have levels of comfort? It's been well proven that non-human animals express emotions (and feel them) via animal behavior scientists. Perhaps the most famous is Marc Bekoff - Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and is a Fellow of the Animal Behavior Society and a former Guggenheim Fellow. Please see his works to learn more: http://ebio.colorado.edu/index.php/people-faculty/people-emeritus?view=employee&id=41 orhttp://literati.net/Bekoff/ or http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/bloggers/marc-bekoff
>
> 4. Because animals cannot give consent to what is being done to them, is it acceptable to test on them? Giving consent is not justification for testing or not testing. Put another way, a person may be unable to speak or even think, so they cannot give consent. But, following logic, this does not mean that it is then OK to test on them.

Here are the other answers I've produced for others and you may be able to use:

1. In your professional opinion, does animal experimentation
present more positives or negatives?

Absolutely, negatives.
Animal testing is unnecessary and is a waste of resources.
Alternatives exist which are superior and relate more to human
physiology. For more on why animal testing is unnecessary and
wasteful see http://www.pcrm.org/resch/anexp/index.html

2. What, in your opinion, is the most positive thing about
animal testing? Absolutely nothing positive about it. As I just
stated, it's a waste of resources that actually ends up affecting
human health in a negative way.

3. What, in your opinion, are the most negative factors of animal testing?
As I mentioned in question 1, it is a waste of research dollars as the
tests are ineffective. I'll refer you to another

I need to refer you to a few additional websites that mention how
animal tests are ineffective and waste resources. Also, they are
unreliable and dangerous. Please see
http://www.pcrm.org/resch/anexp/LD50.html

http://www.pcrm.org/resch/anexp/dangerous_med.html

http://www.navs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ain_sci_science_future&AddInterest=1021

http://www.navs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ain_pt_animal_tests

4. Do you believe animal experimentation is acceptable when
viewing it from a medical standpoint?

No. After you read the links above, you'll see why.

5. Do you think animal experimentation has had an impact on the
medical advancements made thus far?

No. As I've said, we've actually missed out on important discoveries
because animal tests are so unreliable.

6. Do you feel the alternatives to animal experimentation
provide adequate and sufficient information?
Absolutely, and so does Johns Hopkins University. You can learn more
about non-animal testing methods at The Johns Hopkins Center for
Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) http://caat.jhsph.edu/

7. What types of issues does animal experimentation present financially?

Again, they waste financial resources. You'll see that as you visit
the links above.

8. What do you think testing alternatives would do for the cost
of animal experimentation, and why?

As you'll read at The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal
Testing (CAAT) http://caat.jhsph.edu/ the costs will decrease.

9. Do you believe the controversial issue of animal
experimentation will ever cease to exist?

Yes. Many of these issues just need to be talked about and evidence
shown in order for them to change. You can already see that these
issues have come to the front in recent years. Many people and
organizations are changing daily. Plus, with respected groups like
The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT)
putting forth the truth on alternatives, it's only a matter of time
that all groups will follow their lead.

10. What would you suggest be done to solve the debate of animal
experimentation?

People just need to educate themselves to the truth of these issues.
After you read the links above, you'll be 10 steps ahead of where you
are now, as you'll realize that animal experimentation is fully
unnecessary.

What kinds of alternatives would be good ideas for animal testing?

We have an excellent page on alternatives to animal testing at:
http://www.geari.org/alternatives-to-animal-testing.html That page
will provide all you need to know on the issue. In summary, quite a
few worthy alternatives exist.

2. How harmful is the medication to the animals?

Every animal gets very sick when exposed to the testing. Most are
killed based on the test. So, 100% will be sick, as what they are
exposed to is designed to make them sick.

An excellent page that speaks of these issues can be found at
http://www.navs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ain_pt_testing_main

3. How many animals are used each year?

According to this excellent page –
http://www.navs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=faq_main

"It's impossible to say exactly how many, but the number is estimated
at tens of millions of animals on an annual basis. The vast majority
of the animals used—about 90 percent—are rats and mice specifically
bred for the purpose of laboratory research."

4.What kinds of effects does the medication have on the animals?

Every animal gets very sick when exposed to the testing. Most are
killed based on the test. So, 100% will be sick, as what they are
exposed to is designed to make them sick.

An excellent page that speaks of these issues can be found at
http://www.navs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ain_pt_testing_main

5. Where do scientists perform the testing?

Unfortunately, this type of testing is carried out in nearly every
type of environment. The largest two settings are in pharmaceutical
companies and within business such as Proctor and Gamble, Johnson and
Johnson and the like. Another setting that does a significant amount
of testing is at universities. Unfortunately though, the government
carries out a large amount of testing as well as do charities.

EU Ban on Seal Products from Canada Works: So, What Does Canada Do? The Obvious: Sell to China!!

Yep, we all know that China is the cruelest country on Earth, caring little for any other species. So, obviously there will be a market there for dead baby seal products from the horrific Canadian baby seal slaughter!

We’ve written countless articles on the cruelty in China – here is one: http://geari.blogspot.com/2006/03/crash-course-in-unbelievable-cruelty.html

Oh, and here is just one article we’ve done about the annual baby seal slaughter done by Canada every year: http://geari.blogspot.com/2009/03/sick-cruel-canada-begins-its-annual.html

Read on to see just how great this cruel friendship is. Sad to see that instead of getting the point, Canada is sticking to it’s cruel ways and will keep selling the products of dead, tortured baby seals.

Canada banking on Chinese appetite for seal meat to offset losses from EU ban

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/canada-ink-deal-sell-seal-meat-oil-china-20110112-063220-068.html

By The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – Wed, 12 Jan 3:38 PM EST

A seal hunter drags a harp seal back to his snowmobile during the annual seal hunt …

BEIJING, China - China has agreed to import Canadian seal meat and oil in a deal the federal government hopes will create new markets for the embattled industry.
Fisheries Minister Gail Shea announced the agreement Wednesday in a conference call from
Beijing, where she is trying to promote Canadian seafood and seal products.

Shea said the deal will take effect Thursday and make Canada the only country allowed to export seal meat and oil to the massive Chinese market.

"For Canada, sealing is about more than fur — the trade of other seal products represents a growing share of what is already a multimillion-dollar business," she said.

"This is all part of the bigger picture of growing this industry to its full potential."

But animal rights activists say Canadian processors could have a hard time selling the maligned products in China, which they say has little appetite for the meat and is joining a growing number of countries that view the seal hunt as inhumane.

Rebecca Aldworth, a Canadian spokeswoman for the Humane Society of the United States, said she was in China in November to screen footage from last year's seal hunt off eastern Canada.

Aldworth said there is rising opposition to the hunt and a reluctance to accept the products as food sources.

"I don't believe there is any future for the Canadian sealing industry in China," she said from Montreal.

"I'm confident the people of China will reject these products of cruelty just as the rest of the world has done."

Shea said it's hoped any new markets in China will offset expected losses from a recently imposed ban on the importation of seal products into the European Union.

She couldn't put a dollar value on the possible seal meat and oil exports, but said it will be up to the industry to promote a product they have tried for years to introduce to the Asian country.

"Initialling this arrangement of course means we now have access, but it will be up to the industry to ensure that we actually start selling some of these products into the marketplace," she said.

China is the third largest export market of Canadian seafood products, with an average of over $300 million in exports annually.

Only a fraction of the quota of 330,000 seals was caught last year, with many sealers choosing to stay home. Korea and Japan are the only other countries that buy edible seal products.
Participation in the seal hunt has been falling since the introduction of the EU ban last year and a decrease in markets.

Fisheries officials estimate that about 5,000 individuals derive some income from sealing.

In 2007, the landed value of the harp seal harvest was $12 million and the average price per pelt received by sealers was approximately $52, compared to $14 in 2009 and about $23 last year.

I’m sure by now that most of you have heard that the sickest man on the planet, Michael Vick wants to “own” a dog. Fing joke.

Oh, and here’s another one:

“Vick did all that and more to his dogs, and even threw family pets into the pit with fighters and laughed while they were mauled, according to a witness who testified to federal investigators.”

Ass Backward Bryan Mazon, the owner of Boca Tacos and Tequila in Tucson, Arizona Was Going to Sell Lion Tacos: Threats Stopped Him

Yep, seems cruel, ass backward Bryan Mazon, the owner of Boca Tacos and Tequila in Tucson, Arizona was going to sell Lion tacos. Yep, tacos made with African Lion. Hey Bryan…aren’t you already using enough animals in your “food?” Judging by the list below you're nearing the use of ever species known.

Article:

Threats keep Arizona eatery's lion tacos off menu

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_tucson_african_lion_tacos

– Mon Jan 24, 11:15 pm ET

TUCSON, Ariz. – An Arizona restaurant has decided to scrap plans to offer African lion meat in its tacos.

Bryan Mazon, the owner of Boca Tacos and Tequila, said Monday that his Tucson eatery has received "many threats" against the restaurant, family members, customers and vendors since he announced last week that he was taking prepaid orders for the exotic tacos.
Boca planned to start serving the lion tacos Feb. 16 at a cost of $8.75 apiece.

Mazon says his restaurant received orders from people around the world. The eatery already has served up python, alligator, elk, kangaroo, rattlesnake, oysters, turtle, duck and frog legs in its tacos.

Mazon says he'll continue to bring unique menu items to the Tucson community and his customers, but not at the expense of safety.

Forgotten How Sadistic Michael Vick is? “Jumper cables were clipped onto the ears of...dogs…connected to...batteries before…tossing...into water"

Oh, and here’s another one:

“Vick did all that and more to his dogs, and even threw family pets into the pit with fighters and laughed while they were mauled, according to a witness who testified to federal investigators.”

Laughed, they said.

It’s sad to think that there are those out there that have forgotten just how cruel, sadistic, twisted, and sick Michael Vick is. My thought is that this is because it had to do with crimes against dogs vs. against kids or people. Let’s all remember that he was convicted of felonies!

And before you say I’m a hater, non-football guy, let me tell you that I coach and play football. I care enough about the integrity of the sport that I’ll clearly say that letting Vick back in to make him and others rich brought the NFL down to a very low level.

OK, now read this:

"The details that got to me then and stay with me today involve the swimming pool that was used to kill some of the dogs," Reynolds wrote on her blog. "Jumper cables were clipped onto the ears of underperforming dogs, then, just like with a car, the cables were connected to the terminals of car batteries before lifting and tossing the shamed dogs into the water."

She continued, "We don't know how many suffered this premeditated murder, but the damage to the pool walls tells a story. It seems that while they were scrambling to escape, they scratched and clawed at the pool liner and bit at the dented aluminum sides like a hungry dog on a tin can.

And, most importantly are these telling statements of truth about how Vick has never apologized for the blatant dog torture:

“Even worse, he's shown no sign of understanding of, or regret over, the fate of his dogs.
"Vick has never expressed one word of remorse for what he did to those dogs," said McClay.

"Not in any of his public statements, and not in his appearance on '60 Minutes.' Vick said he 'let it happen.' He slammed and beat and hung dogs to death. It's like Ted Bundy saying, 'I let someone murder this girl.' He doesn't take any responsibility for it."
I’ll leave it at that. Here is the story the quotes came from. Please read on.

Michael Vick's unpaid dues: Why dog advocates aren't moving on

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2009/11/03/petscol110309.DTL

When football player Michael Vick made his first post-prison appearance in a Philadelphia Eagles uniform, he got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd. His recent reception in the Bay
Area was far cooler -- at last month's game between the Eagles and the Oakland Raiders, he was greeted with protestors, picket signs and a plane flying over the stadium with a banner reading "Dogfighter Go Home!"

But even in the dog-loving Bay Area, Vick had plenty of defenders. "Sooner or later you're going to have to forgive the guy anyway," Charles Wright, a 44-year-old Oakland tow truck driver, told protestors after the game. "You may as well get it out of your system."

Another fan yelled, "Come on, the dude paid his debt to society."

In other words, "move on." But however many times dog lovers hear such advice, they're not getting any closer to taking it. That's because not only has Vick not served one minute in prison for animal cruelty, he was far more cruel to his dogs than most of his defenders seem to realize.

Most people are aware that Michael Vick was "convicted of dog fighting." They know he went to prison, and they've also probably seen the news stories, including a moving Sports Illustrated cover story, about the Vick dogs that were rescued and rehabilitated after being seized from his Bad Newz Kennels.

But that's only part of the story.

"What Michael Vick did was not just dog fighting," said Marthina McClay of Our Pack, a pit bull rescue group in Santa Clara, and the owner of one of the Vick dogs, Leo. "It went so far beyond that, and most people who defend him are uninformed. They don't really realize what Michael Vick did."

If you're one of the people McClay is talking about, let me invite you into Donna Reynolds' nightmare.

Reynolds is the co-founder of Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pitbulls (BAD RAP), an East Bay organization with a national reputation for rescuing and rehabilitating pit bulls. They rehabbed and cared for many of the dogs seized from Vick's Bad Newz Kennels after his arrest in April of 2007.

She's definitely not what you'd call a fragile flower, and she's been working with ex-fighting pits for longer than a lot of the people reading this have been out of kindergarten. It's fair to say she's seen the worst things that people can do to dogs, but there's still a story she can't get out of her mind.

It was a sweltering day in September of 2007, and Reynolds was in Virginia to evaluate the 49 pit bulls found alive on Vicks' property. A federal agent who had been at the scene when the property was searched was driving her to the various facilities holding the dogs, and they got to talking about what the investigation had turned up.

"I wear some pretty thick skin during our work with dogs, but I can't shake my minds-eye image of a little black dog splashing frantically in bloody water ... screaming in pain and terror ... brown eyes saucer wide and tiny black white-toed feet clawing at anything, desperate to get a hold. This death did not come quickly. The rescuer in me keeps trying to think of a way to go back in time and somehow stop this torture and pull the little dog to safety. I think I'll be looking for ways to pull that dog out for the rest of my life."

Vick did all that and more to his dogs, and even threw family pets into the pit with fighters and laughed while they were mauled, according to a witness who testified to federal investigators.

That's what sends dog lovers out to football games with protest signs: knowing that Michael Vick tortured and killed innocent dogs. That he has never paid for that abuse or even apologized for it.

Because the nation's most notorious dogfighter pled "not guilty" to animal cruelty charges -- charges that were eventually dropped in a plea bargain -- and he was convicted only of bankrolling a dogfighting conspiracy, for which he served 18 months in prison before being welcomed back to the public spotlight.

Even worse, he's shown no sign of understanding of, or regret over, the fate of his dogs.

Reynolds doesn't think it's an accident that most of Vick's supporters are so in the dark about his crimes against dogs.

"It worked out nicely for Vick that he never faced his animal abuse charges in court," she told me. "That meant football fans were spared the most disturbing details of his tortures and could go back to their Sunday night ritual with barely a hiccup."

Those who weren't spared those disturbing details, like Reynolds and McClay, aren't finding it easy, or even possible, to move on.

"I look at Leo's big, fat head and wonderful, loving heart," McClay said, "and wonder, how can you kill something like that? And now that's okay because Vick did his time, and we should just move on? How do you move on from that?"

Well, you might say, that's our criminal justice system, and that's professional sports. And you'd be right, as far as it goes.

But before it goes too far -- before you, too, become one of the people saying Vick's done his time and deserves to get on with his life -- consider something other than the heartwarming stories about ex-Vick dogs making visits to cancer wards and schools for troubled kids.

Think about the ones who were buried in the dirt of Bad Newz Kennels, who aren't getting much attention outside the dog world.

The horrific fate of those dogs is why Reynolds is actually glad about the continued debate between Vick's defenders and pit bull advocates -- it makes it harder for what he did to be buried along with the dogs he killed.

"Much of the public still sees pit bulls as willing gladiators rather than the victims that they are," she told me. "We have a long way to go before open debate on the topic of animal abuse is welcome in most living rooms, so the outrage about Vick's tortures is rightfully keeping the subject alive."

I suppose that's the silver lining. I just wish I could get the image of those frightened, drowning dogs out of my head. And I wish I believed they were haunting Michael Vick, too.

Documentary “To Skin A Cat” to Bring Awareness to the Killing of Leopards for Use in Traditional Garments, Mainly by Religious Group - Shembe Church

I received this email and promised to let you all know about this project. Sounds very worthy and I encourage you all to look into it. Looks like they need support to get the filming started so I’ll leave that up to you all. But, at least take a few minutes to learn about this horrible issue driven (once again) by ridiculous religions customs.

The main site is at www.toskinacat.org but you’ll also see in the email below an additional link.

Email:

Thanks for the great info posted on GEARI. The videos of the Foie Gras assembly lines were particularly impacting. I'd also like to commend you on the range of articles posted. I find it easy to get sucked into a particular line of animal welfare and while I consider it important to concentrate one's energies, it's also critical to keep a broad sense of the varying issues going on.
I'm wondering if you would consider assisting me on a project related to your topic of animal rights: the leopard skin trade in southern Africa.
We're trying to make a documentary called To Skin a Cat to create change and awareness around the killing of thousands of leopards for use in traditional garments, mainly used by a religious group known as the Shembe church. Because the issue is so sensitive and widespread, law officials seem unable to do anything about it, despite leopard being a protected species by law.
We're wondering if you might consider publicizing our Kickstarter.com fund raising campaign at http://kck.st/hgAcKz, where we are trying to raise $5000 to cover the costs of filming the critical events of our film that take place during the Shembe pilgrimage in January. I'm happy to provide any information you might need, either by phone 3143699880 (I'm currently in the US) or by email.
We'd be so grateful for any help, advise or publicity you could give us.
Kind regards
Colwyn Thomas

Animal Aid Mission Somalia (AAMSOM) Releases Video Proof of Horrible Cruelty to Dogs: Poisoning Leads to Slow, Painful Deaths

I received this email recently. You’ll see a link to video proof of this cruelty at the end of this message or you can visit this link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buGxAh3GWGY.
Yes, animal cruelty happens in every county throughout the world – sadly.

AAMSOM NGO was founded in 2007 when we saw that there is a great need of such NGO who has great potentiality to tell Somali people the importance of animal living in the people. The main reason the AAMSOM based Borama is since they are in most of Dogs are living in Horn of Africa. An estimation that we took 2009 indicates almost 38,000 Dogs are living Borama district, which was in have problems here, people have slay Dogs to bad treat not give food and water, anyone puts out these dogs in front of his/her home.

These Dogs eat the remaining meats People throw after the dinner, and eat and drink only sprinkle water inside drainages.

There are many complains that people in this city submit local authorities from these un harmful dogs. They told that they are increasing number of dogs in the Borama, therefore they requested the Somaliland governments to kill these dogs using poisonous meats.

Killing and poisoning dogs is the main issue and efforts that local government of the Borama took nowadays, this action was started 22 December 2010 until today the government eliminates more than 7,000 domestic dogs.
