Congressman reacts to pig farm story

CLEVELAND -- Congressman Dennis Kucinich thinks we need tougher laws to protect the animals we use as food.

He watched our story on a special prosecutors investigation into how swine are treated at a Wayne County farm.

The Humane Farming Association, a non-profit animals rights group sent in an undercover investigator. That investigator spent two months on the Wiles farm. His camera caught animals being kicked, even killed. During our follow up story we did not show the most disturbing acts caught on tape but Congressman Dennis Kucinich came by the Channel 3 studios and saw the tape. He was stunned.

"There needs to be federal laws which make it very clear that animals raised for food have to be treated in a humane way," said Kucinich.

The Congressman says when the new congressional session begins he'll work to stop this and to make laws like the Humane Slaughter Act tougher.

"I promise I'm going to take another look at these federal laws and see where the laws can be strengthened," he said.

Last night at eleven when most kids were in bed, anchor Romona Robinson warned,
"this video is very disturbing."

We warned you then showed you what was caught on tape.

"I think what's shocking is the callousness and disregard for the animals, throwing the animals and strangling the animals by the rope for example," said Dr Stephen Kaufman, the local President of Vegetarian Advocates.

"These are really the standards in modern animal agricultural factory farming," said Kaufman.

But not everyone agrees, some say the farmer's job is tough enough. One person who knows Ken and Joe Wiles wrote our story was one sided and they along with their workers are hard working.

"See you later buddy," said Ken Wiles, the farm owner.

His son Joe spoke to Channel 3 News briefly, denying any abuse.

"I'm going to ask you to leave," said Joe.

We tried talking with them. They declined but many were upset at seeing the video from their farm.

Others thanked us and even more wrote e-mail asking what they can do to help?

Congressman Dennis Kucinich is asking those who want to help to contact him.

He will include their names on a list of Americans calling for tougher legislation.

He'll take that list with him to Capitol Hill to show other members of congress he hopes will join in the effort to create new laws.
