Three Former Dairy Workers at Bettencourt Dairies' Dry Creek Dairy in Hansen, Idaho Charged With Misdemeanor Animal Cruelty

A little late, but good to know. Seems this is the state’s largest dairy operation.  This makes this all the worse in that even the largest operation is not being monitored by the USDA at all for cruelty issues.  It took a group to go undercover.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Three former dairy workers with Idaho's largest dairy operation have been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty after undercover video shot by an animal rights group showed workers stomping, dragging and beating cows inside a milking barn.

The video was shot using a hidden camera by a member of Mercy for Animals who got a job at Bettencourt Dairies' Dry Creek Dairy in Hansen for a few weeks this summer.

It shows workers at the dairy beating cows with a pink cane as the animals slipped and slid on the wet 

concrete floor; workers kicking and stomping cows that have fallen between the metal bars in the milking stalls; and a cow being dragged out of the barn by a chain around her neck as she lies on the concrete floor.

Vegan Snacks and Ingredients: Things to be Aware Of

I received two messages recently that I thought would be good for everyone to read.  Both are in reference to lists we use (and need to update) that talk about vegan snacks and cereals.  We use third party lists, so I need to get back in touch with the other groups to let them know of these concerns.  But in the mean time, please read these two postings below as they contain great information.   Here are the two emails:

> D3, which is derived from sheep. I just thought I would have you be aware of

> that so you can remove it from the list. Along with anything Kraft, as it is

> made with Enzymes, which are made from calf stomachs.

Unfortunately the Peta list of "Vegan" stuff isn't actually vegan. It's an awful resource really because on the bottom of the list it has a disclaimer that basically says that the items that are listed are "mostly vegan...because it's hard for everyone to eat completely vegan". DO NOT USE PETA'S LIST IF YOU'RE A NEW VEGAN. At least not without double checking the ingredients after you've learned about the sneaky ingredients that make something not vegan. Some recipes do change over the years so you may get lucky and find one that used to not be vegan is now vegan! Some things to watch out for that were in MANY things from this list are: red 40, whey, casein and L-Cysteine (which you will find in some cookie/pastry type snacks. It's a dough conditioner used commercially that is made from hair.) If something contains margarine, DON'T assume it's vegan! Most margarine brands actually DO have dairy in them. A few off brand names are vegan. Speaking of off brands, you will have more luck with those brands being accidentally vegan. I'm not entirely sure but my guess is it's somehow cheaper to make them that way. In particular, a lot of dollar stores carry a lot of accidentally vegan snacks. With "Freshley's" brand oatmeal creme pies they use oils instead of creme, so it's vegan. BUT you still don't know if the sugar is vegan. This is tricky to find out so you'll either just have to trust it, call the company and talk to someone about where they get their sugar from (certain companies just don't use processes that involve animals) or forgo the cheap yummy snacks and pay for something labeled as vegan or an organic snack, as all organic sugar is vegan. Red 40 is something to really watch out for if you're committed to being vegan. I've seen a lot of vegans who simply ignore the fact that something has Red 40 in it because they like the snack. THAT MEANS YOU ARE EATING SOMETHING THAT IS NOT VEGAN. You need to know this and let this sink in before you nosh on that snack with Red 40 in it! Red 40 is a very commonly used dye that is made of smashed up carmine beetles. Recently there was huge scandal when people found out it's in about half of the Starbucks drinks. (Except you're totally fine with munching on those Skittles, "but God that's so gross, Starbucks!" I heard someone actually say that as they were eating a bag of skittles and gummy bears at the same time. Oh boy...) But anyways, there are a lot of sneaky ingredients and companies change their recipes a lot, which sometimes makes things accidentally vegan, but sometimes also makes something that was vegan NOT vegan. A Call for Help from Dare County (Hatteras Island) North Carolina: Extreme Animal Cruelty Occurring: Can You Help or Know Anyone in this Area?

We are trying to form a group called Dare Citizens Against Animal Cruelty here in Dare County (Hatteras Island) NC.

Locals here are running down animals trying to cross our only road for fun. The death toll is staggering and horrific. Our local Sheriff Doug Doughtie and Board of Commissioners think it is funny and won't help no matter what. This is also a National Park with many endangered species. The Audubon Society has already sanctioned these animal abusive locals with a lawsuit closing the beaches, but they are not helping save any of the rest of the wildlife.

There was a raccoon mother trying to take her three babies across the road she was run down, they saw the babies clinging to the dead mothers body and turned around came back ran down 2 of the babies, then ran down the 3rd on the way back by-I know this because only one car had been by since I had checked the road and the blood splatters in the opposite lane told the whole story. How can anyone find that amusing?

Recently, Tony and Candy Willis's 10 and 14 year old boys lured a puppy a half mile out to the busy highway and threw a stick out into traffic to watch it get hit which it did and had to have it's leg amputated. The couple who run the pet boarding place here witnessed it offered to testify but Sheriff Doughtie and the magistrate are refusing to let the owner (one of our only single african-american mothers) bring charges even though it is a felony under NC Statute 14-360.The Parents think it is funny!

This has become a place where drunks sit on their porches and use stray innocent cats as target practice, which I have personally witnessed. I am trying to fix, feed and build shelters for as many cats here as I can and I feed all other animals to keep them away from the road. I have been picking up the dead bodies on the road for 5 years now and taking some pictures so I know what is going on here. There is a culture of animal cruelty here.

The Idiocy and Fallacy of The Paleo Diet Exposed, Part II: New Article Proves - Human Ancestors Were Nearly All Vegetarians

I wrote last week about an incredible article written by the famous Dr. McDougall that lays waste to the idiot reasoning of the Paleo Dietput forth by the fanatical CrossFit crew.

  

Here again is another well written article that follows the same line of reasoning based on strong evidence.

If I was to sum it up, I’d say, yes, there is a paleo diet, but those who want to TRULY follow it may not really like what it TRULY is!  Read on.

The majority of the food consumed by primates today–and every indication is for the last thirty million years–is vegetable, not animal. Plants are what our apey and even earlier ancestors ate; they were our paleo diet for most of the last thirty million years during which our bodies, and our guts in particular, were evolving. In other words, there is very little evidence that our guts are terribly special and the job of a generalist primate gut is primarily to eat pieces of plants. We have special immune systems, special brains, even special hands, but our guts are ordinary and for tens of millions of years those ordinary guts have tended to be filled with fruit, leaves, and the occasional delicacy of a raw hummingbird

And so if you are serious about eating a really old school paleo diet, if you mean to eat what our bodies evolved to eat in the “old” days, you really need to be eating more insects. Then again, our guts aren’t so different from those of rats. Maybe the rats… , well, I’ll come back to them ⁴.

Which paleo diet should we eat? The one from twelve thousand years ago? A hundred thousand years ago? Forty million years ago? IF we want to return to our ancestral diets, the ones we ate when most of the features of our guts were evolving, we might reasonably eat what our ancestors spent the most time eating during the largest periods of the evolution of our guts. If that is the case, we need to be eating fruits, nuts, and vegetables—especially fungus-covered tropical leaves.

Or maybe you are really paleo and you are going to focus on insects, which might favor other bacteria (able to break down insect chitin). Eating insects has many advantages too, albeit not for the insects. Any of these possibilities are better than the average modern diet, one so bad that any point in the past can come to seem like the good ole days, unless you go too far back to a point when our ancestors lived more like rats and probably ate everything, including their own feces. Sometimes what happens in paleo should really stay in paleo

The Idiocy and Fallacy of The Paleo Diet Exposed: “The Paleo Diet Is Uncivilized (And Unhealthy and Untrue)”

This is perhaps the most coherent and cogent article I’ve ever read on just how stupid and illogical the Paleo Diet is.  Written by the famous (and overly respected) Dr. McDougall, and referencing actual medical studies and solid anthropological findings, it lays waste to the faddish diet that the newest idiots of today push.  You see mostly the CrossFit zealots religiously pushing it, and, where there are zealots, there are idiots following their every word.  I know a few of them near where I live. 

I’m going to let the article speak for itself.  I’m sure there are plenty of fools that will not read it, but for those of you who like the truth, and for those who need ammunition (the intelligent kind) against the slack jawed, robot followers of the zealots, this is for you.  Plus, it’s just plain interesting to see what very respected PhD anthropologists have found to prove what the real early human diet was.  Hint..it’s not what the CrossFit whacks proclaim.

I’m hoping they read this.  See, they’ll say they’re not allowing animal testing, yet they are allowing their products to be sold in China, which means very likely (and they know this), they will be tested on animals.  

SO, THEY ARE OPENING THE DOOR TO ALLOWING ANIMAL TESTING ON THEIR PRODUCTS.  THEY’RE JUST LETTING SOMEONE ELSE DO THEIR DIRTY WORK!

Just look at this paragraph and tell me if it doesn’t scream blindness in order for profit:

“For those of you unfamiliar with China’s policies, the sticking point is this: the Chinese government reserves the right to conduct animal testing with cosmetic products before the products are approved for use by Chinese citizens. The government has not told us if they have exercised this right with our products. So, our brand does not test on animals, but the Chinese government might conduct a one-time test using our products.”

That last sentence says it all you idiots!  You know that they likely will be tested on animals.

Oh, and here’s the one that really got me and proves how far they will go to rationalize their selfish decision.  

“But, we believe that change cannot and will not happen by outside pressure alone in a closed market. Change can only happen from within. When we enter the Chinese market, we will do our part to help make those changes.”

Ah ha ha ha ha ha!  Yeah right!  You’re going to change the cruel mindset of the cruelest people on earth.

Here’s a positive story for the day!  Sometimes, among all the hell we read about comes a good story.

Ironically, it was an arrogant meat eater who told me about Scott Jurek.  Thankfully he did as I now add him to those I look up to.  An amazing vegan athlete whose success simply cannot be denied (well, I’m sure Fox would try).  Truly, this guy is amazing, and, as you’ll see in this excerpt, his greatness was fully realized ONCE he finally went full vegan (or plant based as he says).

“I spent the next two to three years testing the theory. In the spring of '97, I cut out meat. I won the Voyageur again. Then fish. I won the Voyageur a third time, and placed second in my first 100-miler, facing ultrarunning's top competitors. When I finally went vegan in 1999, I lost a layer of fat—the layer that came with eating the cookies and cakes and cheese pizza that so many omnivores and even vegetarians gulp down. So, obviously then, they want the cruel Chinese to use their products as there are so many of them. So, they’ve decided to screw any concerns of their customers who do not want to torture animals and instead bow down to the cruelest around.

As we know, no species is safe when the Chinese are around. They not only love to eat everything that walks, including dogs and cats, they also think they are entitled to kill such majestic creatures like Elephants so that they can have jewelry. There is no end to their selfishness.

Horse Slaughter to Become Legal in the U.S. Again: Congress Restores Funding For

You’d think horses would be off limits in this country due to their long history and, of course, to the fact that most people do not eat them here! But, unfortunately, the ass jacks in Mexico and other parts of the world, including France, do.

We’ll have to see how this plays out, as this just came up. Lovely congress apparently is OK with killing and eating horses: “After a 5-year hiatus, Congress has restored funding for U.S. inspectors to oversee horse slaughter, opening the door for horses to be killed and butchered in the United States for the first time since 2006.”

By the way, it is the Wyoming state representative Sue Wallis and her pro-slaughter group "United Horsemen," that is pushing for horse slaughter.

You’ve likely heard that “An Ohio town is under lockdown as dozens of wild animals including bears, wolves and tigers have escaped from a private preserve are and are on the loose after the owner of the preserve has been found dead.”

Everyone knows that cops lean toward killing. But, you’d hope that faced with the reality of killing an animal that was unnaturally caged for a long time, that they’d vote for sedation. But, oh, wait, they’re men too, and men love to kill. Oh, I guess saving them is too much work for gun-happy police.

Vietnam, like China, Supports Stealing, Torturing, and Eating Dogs: Common in Many Restaurants

What a disturbing story. Seems China isn’t the only sick country in the world that gets off on torturing and then eating dogs. Seems that many in Vietnam also love to steal, and then torture and eat dogs, many of which were sold to restaurants.

I’m not going to go on and on about this, as this is an obviously horrible situation. I’ve instead pasted in parts of the story below which summarize this horrendous cruelty taking part daily in Vietnam and other savage Asian countries (“[t]he tradition, also popular in parts of China, South Korea and the Philippines…”)
